Subject: RE: Last Calf of the year born over the Easter weekend - EPD's vs Looks

My first 2 yr old heifer calved yesterday. 20 some to go. Mama is not the most outstanding heifer to look at but she took care of business and the little heifer calf she had got right up and sucked. Both are black baldies. As one of my registered seedstock suppliers often says in referring to excessive birth weight, the most profitable trait in this business is a live calf.

I had a heck of a time running that little calf down to give her a shot of 7-way and her navel cord was still fresh. It is a promising start for calving out of my new heifer bull. I hope they all do as well.

I calve heifers out on pasture with the cows so it's not too practical to do night checks. If I know of one in the works at dark, I will go check later on but otherwise I leave them alone. One thing about this time of year with the long days the time period from dusk to dawn is short.
