rootstock is a term used to describe any type of root and main stem. Generally each is raised for a purpose. Mostly strength and disease free.  Usually a strong rootstock is used with a good fruiting tree that may have a weak trunk or carry disease. Haven't seen them us the same tree for rootstock as the graft.
