| Don't throw away the possibility that the pliers guy is telling you what you want to hear.
I can't read anyone's mind, but I suspect the trouble here is a flawed definition of Christianity.
Try this-
Go find a church with some members that were former drunks, dopeheads, thieves, hoes, playboys, con-men, - former scoundrels in general. I emphasize "former" three times because that is one of the business cards that you identify them with. These churches exist. Might be a big one, might be a small one. Spend a little time and get to know some of them.
They can teach you more about what a true Christian is in six months than years of studying on your own.
