You need more competition in your state. If you don't pay premiums here you don't get any milk. Most cheese companies I know in our state have good cheese sales and markets. I don't think much of the cheese being dumped on the CME comes from our state. The premiums that some are stating on this thread are misleading. Milk is priced different ways depending where you sell it. We sell our milk F.o.b. so we pay our own hauling thus we get paid a hauling premium or allowance. Yes we get a direct shipping premium but it's more like 15-20 cents because it saves the buyer time and money. The rest of the premiums are for cell count and solids. Yes they can add up to $2.00 cwt if you have high solids, low cell count,and pay for your own hauling.
