I've been on a few different railroads around the US. I rode regular Amtrak from Philly to NY and then aways up along the Hudson River. It was a much easier and more comfortable way to travel than going by air. Amtrak staff were very helpful. I rode the Acela train on the way back. It was a bit smoother ride and faster, but not worth the extra money. I also rode Alaska rail on vacation a few years back. The service was fantastic. They're smartly geared toward the travel business. It was one of the best parts of the trip. I've also been on smaller lines SEPTA in Philly, NJ transit. They both were handy and cheap. If it wasn't for the time difference, I'd never fly again.
