To the older generations, farmers lived a hard life of minimal reward. It was physically difficult, wore your body down, and you retired with a small net worth. You lived in an old home far from town and had some level of isolation. Your career was not glamours or desirable but earned a level of respect and admiration for doing what was necessary to support a country.
Look at a full-time farm operation today. What is their net worth? How nice is their home? The cars they drive? How do they act around their non-farming peers? How do they approach money; what constitutes “a lot” to spend on something?
You can say “well I deserve to make a good living” and if that’s what you believe, that’s fine. But wider society sees that and is continuously getting tired of paying for a portion of it.
