Some folks use a budget of $x total value on replacements at weaning. Roughly speaking you save more girls when they are cheap and sell more girls when the are highly valued.
You set your $x and try to stay there. This is more difficult for smaller operations. I've found it fairly easy as you attain close to 100 cows.
