I baled a lot of 11-13% alfalfa and the leaf shatter is definitely an issue. Cows have it figured out, all they need to do is lick the hay to get the loose leafs and leave the stems behind. Turns out you actually have to pay attention to the hay, can’t just go bale when it’s dry.

Just the plastic cost to wrap a bale must be around $5? At $.05/lb hay cost I can “afford” 100lbs of loss every bale when put up dry due to plastic wrap savings, would be about a 8% loss by bale weight. What the cows wasted gets used for bedding and works out about right since I seldom put out straw bales.
