southern MN | Interesting thread. Here we are in the mostly prairie with wooded ravines draining down into the Minnesota river deep valley. So cattle can keep up with the light brush that would try to grow in the prairie areas if one just grazes sensibly. The deep ravines are wooded with hardwoods so not much growth of anything on the surface.
The neighbors pasture started growing over with saplings and brush when it didn’t have cattle for a decade. They put cattle back on and going into the third year the cattle took down all but the sturdiest of saplings.
Grass is mostly the native plant here, with common sense grazing an area will return mostly to grass here over time.
Now, trying to keep fence lines clear of trees, that is a job! Birds love planting invasive mulberries and other trees along the wire.
Good to hear the different methods needed in different areas.
