| This is an area where variable rate planting or just putting in blocks in the field at different rates over a few years can be beneficial. After several years of planting different rates in field in similar soil types we settled on 30k to 33.5k on most of the ground. It takes a few years to really learn because rainfall, planting date, etc. can make a big difference so you try to manage to the average. I'm sure we are still in need of adjustment and don't have it close to perfect but it does seem to make fields more uniform in yield. As hybrids change it makes the data continually need to be tested and tweaked but I think it is more than worth the hassle. | |
