I have two farms with pipelines through them.  One is a 6" high pressure line that goes between two fuel storage facilities.  The last time we had to cross that it was required that a company rep be there and that we had to hand dig within 5 ft of either side of the line.  Then the wire we were installing had to be in conduit for 10' on each side of the line.  The other pipeline is similar but is used for NH3.  All the people responsible for these lines take their job seriously.
