I get $18 for hay but most jobs are 40-50 bales. I think $12 is where you need to be but 400 bale days makes $10 a number most custom balers would jump on under your terms. Just say 3000 bales in 10 days=$30,000 Baler trades running closer to $5 on late model to new, low bales. $15,000 toward baler trade and $50 hr for tractor for 10 hours a day for 10 days= $5000. So roughly $100 an hour or $10,000 for the custom baler. If he is paying an operator $30 and he services and blows off in addition to baling he will have 125 hours or $3750 in labor cost. Throw in a flat tire or two, a bearing or belt on the baler could be an easy $1250 and the owner could be looking at a $5000 profit. Pretty slim operating margin.
