| My dad loved farming and helped me for a few years after he "retired."
I didn't want to draw a line in the dirt and tell him he couldn't operate equipment any more, but his vision and cognitive skills got to a point where I had to tell him that it was time to actually retire and not drive the tractors, etc. any longer.
Giving hints, etc. were not enough to get him to quit.
That was the hardest day of my life and many tears were shed.
Not long after that both parents failed cognitive tests given by a neurologist and driving a car or pickup went away too. That was another stressful time.
A few months later they moved into assisted living even though they didn't really think that they needed help, but got along well there and had some fun again being around more people and doing activities again.
It won't be easy, but when it becomes an issue of safety for them, or those around them, the difficult things in life need to happen and you need to take the keys away. | |
