I take it you have never driven a top shaft synchronized transmission. Atleast in a synchro range high forward and reverse are closely matched and one shift apart. With the top shaft synchronized, much like the IH crash box, you have to shift both sticks when going from forward to reverse; that is a lot of extra shifts when loading manure.
