The big difference in many areas of the western corn belt versus any time before is not only the subsoil is lacking, but the first water, as we call it, that drains into drainage ditches etc., is also gone. Receiving enough hand to mouth rains from here on out for dryland seems very improbable, but not impossible I suppose.
