| My fellow vet friends and I joke about the vets that try to avail themselves of every benefit, freebie, and discount. We refer to them as professional vets.
Also, I was in at a time when service members and vets were not well treated. All this thank you smacks of guilt, to me. They knew where the recruiter was. They know how to volunteer and do other service. They simply chose not to do it. Many of the thank you’d smack of better you than me.
How did Shakespeare put it?
“ And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.”
While some are truly gracious, I think many “think themselves accursed” and try to assuage their guilt with offering us 10% off. I don’t count my service or that of my brothers that cheap. | |
