I'm both a paid and a volunteer firefighter along with a vet. I would say the vast majority would not ask for or expect any type of gratitude. There are always some who will... I know of ones who have complained when they did not get some arbitrary discount... I tend not to stand at events where they ask for first responders and military to stand and be recognized. I almost didn't respond to this. I think being humble is the appropriate way to act. I understand some people want to show their appreciation and I understand that giving a discount is what makes them fill that desire.

^^^I wish there was a like button.^^^

My BIL, who is a Vietnam Vet, says "Don't thank me, I'm thankful I made it back, thank the ones who didn't make it back". Makes me think a little deeper.
