We have a Type I 21 year old son, developed it at 5. It's a tough learning curve but with modern pumps and CGM it doesn't limit him at all. Teen years and puberty were the worst with all the extra hormones. You'll come to realize that although Type I and II are both called diabetes they have very little in common and really are 2 entirely different conditions. The long term effects of high blood sugar apply to both but the treatments and causes are vastly different. You'll be offered lots of advice that may work on Type II that have nothing to do with and no benefit to a Type I.
