Brett, anytime i go more 1/4 mile with 4" laterals, I get less than satisfactory results in chequest or colo soil types. Anymore, went to putting 4" for the first 1/4 mile and then finishing run with 5" if its at 1 tenth or less grade. This would be on 40 foot centers. As far as the surface water, shallow ditches are fine , but anymore I'm happiest when I pop a riser up in a low spot and make the water run to it with a ditcher or very shallow ditch.. I have far better results doing this and I'm not constantly maintaining drainage ditches. In the toughest ares of the field I am thinking about going back and splitting the 40 foot spacing.
