Iowa | I wish it was that easy to tell you the differences. The only real way is to know the serial numbers of each engine, then compare the "groups" that were used to built them. Example: piston and rod groups, turbo groups, camshaft groups, governor groups, fuel injector groups, exhaust manifold groups, etcs. Now, I assume that you will probably find a piston difference between 215 hp and 250 HP. 215 HP will probably be single piece aluminum piston whereas the 250 HP will probably be a two piece design with iron crown and aluminum skirt. This is a pretty generic statement, but without exact serial numbers, this is my best guess. Later on, CAT got so wild as to make the 250 HP at 660 ft lbs of torque with one piston design BUT the 250 HP with 800 ft lbs of torque uses a different piston. You really have to watch out for these changes, I'm sure CAT would say it was necessary for emissions reasons.
