Subject: RE: planters John Deere vs. CIH

We switched from JD to red this year. We had a JD (vac) wing fold before and we got a 1250 front fold this year.

Personally, I wasn't interested in a 1200 pivot planter. If CIH didn't start making the 12 and 16 row front folds, I would have bought another JD.

The JD had good spacing, but the CIH has better seed spacing in corn. We didn't have any problems with our planter this year. I didn't break any seed meter drives.

JD and CIH both make good planters. I doubt that, in my usual planting conditions, one or the other would have a yield advantage.

Like the other people said, there are problems with both brands. Neither is perfect. I would say that JD and CIH are about equally imperfect and both are good planters.

NOTE: If you get row unit hoppers and plan to use Smartboxes, get the support bracket from Redball. If you get the box support from CIH, you can't get the box lids off when you have a smartbox container on the planter.
