Iowa | Help me do the payback when factoring in that extremely high-dollar engine AND the cost of the chip.
I have a '04 GMC and an '03 Chevy set up the same. One -ton duallys, 4X4's, automatics, 6.0 gas, 4.10 rear-ends. Both pull 10-12,000 lbs nearly every mile they travel. Short trips, less than 50 miles, 2-lane roads, then driving around to different "in-town" locations. Run 60 mph or so. Both are in tip-top shape and under 60,000 miles.
I get 7.25 mpg with 10% ethanol "gasoline" nearly always. If I go, say, 100 miles on a 4-lane w/o a trailer and no load in the back. I will get 10.5 or so.
These "trucks" have landscape dumps on them, and only travel about 10,000 miles per year.
I have always felt that the bother in the winter, the high cost of the engine, the fact that we only go ten thousand miles annually, AND that we charged a fuel surcharge last season, it seemed like all customers understood--no real complaints--make a diesel not worth it for me.
Could you diesel guys enlighten me, and by the way, GREAT FUEL MILEAGE!!!
