Another thought completely different from the most common answers already given -- If your mower deck is designed for light duty use, then you will need to slow down and try to mow when you are cutting less than 1/2 inch off. Light duty mower decks are very shallow in height and have no space for the grass to work its way to the discharge outlet. Grass gets missed between the blades because there is too much grass for the deck to handle. Heavy duty and commercial mower decks will be deeper so there is more space above the blades to push the cut grass out.

How do I know? Ignored the salesman trying to sell me a more expensive mower deck and ended up taking it back to get a deeper heavy duty deck at the end of the first day mowing barn lots. Salesman politely said "told you so". He said that the design of the deck was more important than how many Hp the engine was.
