And if I sounded harsh - like you I'm sure - I like the idea of cover crops, new ideas, etc. I try cover crops when I can - but that's only the 5-15 acres like I mentioned. It's so cold & so wet here. Used to be we weren't supposed to plant corn until the soil was 55 degrees. Now we plant whenever the field can take it; rarely see any weeds coming up the ground is so cold. Seed will sit for 2 weeks waiting for the ground to warm.

Neighbor runs a heifer feeding operation, corn & alfalfa rotation. He gets some rye (or ryegrass, not sure which) put on after taking corn silage off. He just started cutting silage, going to be a tough year to get the field planted to cover. Usually works out for him tho. He sure uses a lot of manure & a lot of coop fertilizer; but he gets a lot of tonnage off his acres too. Doesn't need a combine, sometimes he has 20 acres or so of corn left for grain.
