LA22 West of Ponchatoula is very scenic but it has some curves and is not that wide. I would not like to drive this road for the first time after dark and a long tiring day. Maybe going West on I12 from Hammond to Baton Rouge then I10 East to Sorrento will be a better choice. Driving through Baton Rouge after dark and after rush hour should not be a problem.

Apparently, they are very close to Historic Bayou Lafourche. For about 200 years this Bayou was a major transportation route for the area. Closing off this Bayou at Donaldsonville has led to some big environmental problems.

I hope you can tour the area during your visit. Lake Verret and Pierre Part are not that far away.
