| The combustion systems in today's cars and trucks have MAF [Mass Air Flow] sensors. These sensors, along with Oxy sensors and precise fuel injection systems do a super job of getting the fuel/air ratio correct, even as filters begin to lose efficiency. If the MAF sensor isn't "seeing" enough air, you'll get a warning and the filter should be replaced. However, I'm still from the old school. So about every 6 months or so I replace air filters. Usually right after harvest when I ingest the most dirt/dust/other stuff, then again in late Spring. I do NOT take shop air to a filter to "clean" it. Some do, but I choose not to. The only cleaning I'd even consider is a light tapping of the filter on a solid surface to allow heavy dirt to fall off. That's a whole 'nuther debate, folks. | |
