McCartman:
Some of the newer vehicles come with a filter service indicator. My 2003 5.3 L Chevy PU has one, and I drove it for over 90,000 miles on the original filter, without tripping the indicator. I finally broke down and replaced it, but wondered why; it had only a little crud on it, and there was no evidence of dust on the downstream side. The newer flat panel style filters have impressed me, compared with the old rings.
FWIW, this pickup probably spent a little lower proportion of its time on dirt roads than many, but it was certainly no cream puff. They must have done a pretty good job of positioning the air intake on those vehicles.
