Yes, the sharpening port cam on the old one has too much flex to it. You are supposed to put slight pressure straight into the port as you are twisting the bit chuck, but it is too easy to push it off from dead center and this results in uneven sharpening. I'm sure if a person sharpened a lot of bits on a regular basis, this would be overcome with practice and the old DD would sharpen as well as the new models.

The new ones have eliminated that "flex" with a redesigned cam - makes it a lot more foolproof for those of us that drag the thing out only once or twice a year. I will say also that the new models have more settings for odd-ball bits. They also do a better job of putting a split-point on your bits if you choose to do so. The chucks and the bit positioner work the same as the old DD.

As for the sharpening stone - the new ones are pretty much the same as the old. Your old DD should sharpen the cobalt and titanium bits just like the new ones. They both have diamond stones in them.
