OK...so what are the necessary steps to creating perfect cutting faces every time on steel bits by freehanding? Especially the smaller bits...say less than 3/8". I'm not challenging, I'm asking for a fool-proof lesson from someone considering themselves highly successful @ sharpening. What grit stone? Will a belt work instead? Special stone? Do you always dress stone prior to sharpening? Do you use a special dresser? Do you cool w/oil? How do you get both faces equal so the bit cuts from both leading edges & not just one side? How do you get your faces square so the entire surface cuts @ the same time? My problem in hand-sharpening was always consistency. It would be like trying to measure a 7.5" line consistently....with no measuring or marking device..only by eye. However, I admit I don't know what I'm doing. I think our Drill Dr works 90% of the time correctly, but I'm sure my hand sharpened bits don't. Thanks |
