Subject: What were the first no-til drills and planters?

Kansas
How were some of the early no-til folk able to go about it back before it really took off in the late 80's? The first time I ever saw anything about no-til was an AC planter brochure showing the planter planting in the same field a Gleaner was cutting wheat in. Did AC do anything to the planter besides just stick a plow coulter on the fertilizer bar? I've seen pics of the old Buffalo planters but I'm not sure what they did to make them work. And what about drills? How were people making them work in corn residue before hyd down preasure and before heavy duty down preasure springs?
