Burlington, KS | I lost the transfer case side of the double cardan joint on a full time 4 wheel 76 Jeep Cherokee at 60! What a dust cloud as that 16 lb sledgehammer beat the snot out of the floor board. I swear it moved 4 or 5 inches up with every smack, an exciting few seconds while standing on the brakes. The Y pipe held it up and it kind of had a tunnel to spin in. The front corner of the GM 400 Turbo tranny was destroyed. A new pan and hours of welding later I got it to hold most of its oil. I had access to a lot of scrapped aluminum castings at the Jr. College, they had a nice spool gun to use as well. Molten Aluminum is hot, oil soaked into the casting expands, rapidly, got a nice scar to this day from that. Years later dad was still tinkering with patches of JB Weld or Fiberglass. Never did completely stop all the seepage, but a quart a month was livable on a hunting vehicle. | |
