I don't think a TW engine would work because of the front drive oil pump. The block is not machined for a cam driven oil pump either. So in that case, since there would likely be oil pan interference, you're limited to an 8000-9700 era 401 engine.

At the very least, you'd have to use a TW oil pan to make a TW engine block work. The only other question is whether or not you have the actual clearance in the machine to make it work. It's been too long since I've looked into it. I do know that you can't put a TW engine into a 9700 for the very same reason, oil pan interference.
