Subject: oil in water well

We are in the process of building a house and drilled the well last week. Went 40' and hit water at 35' and noticed an oil smell but the water was clear. Started the process of plumbing up the pump, etc. When we dropped a wrench down to confirm depth it came out covered in oily sludge. Decided to wire up the pump and run some out on the ground. After about 20 min the water was crystal clear. We let it run for 5 hours at 10+ gpm (guessing). The water looked clear and you could detect a slight smell to it either oil or sulphur. We pulled the pump out to prevent freezing and will do the same tomorrow. The pump had a film on it but I don't know if that was from earlier in the day. Is there a way to treat this out or am I stuck? I am open to suggestions. Thanks in advance.
