On the dealer's balance sheet, it's now an asset valued at whatever he paid for it. Especially in today's environment of larger and larger dealers, a manager (or even a salesman) may look better to hang onto a piece and wait until he gets what he needs for it rather that taking a cash loss on it. It doesn't make sense if they need cash flow, but if they can afford the carrying costs they may as well hold out as long as they are confident that they will sell for what they need for it.
