| In SW ND I have left corn in the field to dry into December with very little loss. We always have a killing frost by the end of September, so the corn had been drying for over two months. Ice storms are fairly rare up here, so I am not sure how much damage one would do. Wind damage will depend on hybrid, drought stress, and disease pressure. Certain hybrids will start dropping ears in winds of 40 mph, while others will hold their ears in 60-70 mph winds. In my area, I wait until the corn is 20% or less. | |
