We have some very kowlegeable and successful Iowa strip till customers who apply 0.6 units of N per bu of expected yield (as I recall). Since N is very mobile (compared to K & P) in the soil the key to N efficiency is placement AND timing. You can't put down 0.6 lb on a warm day in October and expect it all to be there next June and July when the plant needs it.
