I have had several close calls, most of my machinery is original purchase and older. 1) JD 4640, changed oil in engine, but caught mistake within minutes after I started it and ran it. I put in hydraulic oil. 55 gallon drum looked the same as engine oil. 2)JD 7720 combine, drove it 3-4 miles down the road, after oil change. when , oil covered the windows. Old gasket still on when I put new spin on oil filter on. Excuse: poor lighting, standing on head to change oil filter. 3) 1975 F600 grain truck, spin on oil filter/ again, oil puking out. Excuse: poor lighting, old gasket left on when changing. 4) JD 8400, gasket kinked Excuse, poor lighting, /how the Hll, is a gasket supposed to stay in place with vertical spin on filter. Gravity:>) 5) 1972 F600 grain truck, today. 7 round trips hauling gravel after oil change. Decided to have a tire changed in town, started down the road when I noticed what I thought was dust behind me. Stopped and it was oil puking out the oil filter, smoke on exhaust. Ended up being, the rubber gasket on a canister oil filter. You know, the vertical /bolt thru, paper filter inside. My mistake, I put a rubber washer where it should have been a fiber gasket. So far, I have caught all mistakes before damage. Funny thing is , I rarely check oil level in my pickups, btw oil changes. 3000 miles usually. Anybody else as lucky as me in "bonehead mistakes" Brian |
