Subject: 12v pumps and portable diesel tanks

How do you all get 12v to the pumps on diesel transfer tanks to fuel combines etc in the field? I currently have a hand pump on mine and want to upgrade. Tank sits on a pallet in the bed of pickup. Do you run wires/clamps to the trucks battery every time you use the pump or do you hardwire it somehow? Seems like the running long wires to the trucks battery would become a tangled mess in no time. What about just strapping a spare or deep cycle battery to the pallet? How many gallons do you think I could pump on a single battery charge?
