3.5 lbs is about right if the r12 charge was about 4.5 lbs. If not I still think you may be over charged.
When you charge with the can inverted you need to do it a bit slow so as not to liquid slug the compressor. The valve in your guage set acts as an expansion valve to 'gassify' the liquid before the compressor if you keep the low side at about 40-50 lbs when charging. Otherwise you could damage the compressor.
If you have an expansion valve in your system you will not have an expansion tube or orifice tube.
You said you replaced the reciever dryer... it is directional and I am not sure if it could be in backwards or if yours has different fittings. Could check in case??
