Subject: Conventional hybrids - the future of Ag

Michigan

I received the following from one of the Extension Ag agents in Michigan - they cover a 3 county area.  Thought some may find it interesting.

We have a issue with not enough entries in the conventional herbicide corn
or the Refuge RR corn.
As of today we have only two entries in each of the conventional categories
we really need at least 6-10 to make it worth planting.
The Refuge has 6 entries probably enough to go ahead and plant but could use
more.

I guess we have a choice to either drop all the conventional blocks or we
need to have more entries.

Question:  Where do you as growers see the trend going?  I myself think you will be faced with the same situation in corn that you have in beans.  The problem in corn is worse, in my opinion, because if you find a variety you like you will not be able to save seed like conventional beans.

I also see a huge increase in cost of seed coming next year. But that is an issue for another post.
