You are protective of the surrounding yard, and this is, after all, a beautification project. Ta-heck with the machinery aspect of this.......do it right, tear out the pad and replace it. Then.........call your local landscaper to integrate the newly-damaged yard into a beautiful area of plantings and horticultural excellence. I'm sure (really sure) that there is an enterprise in your area that can take care of this, thus making your wife happy, impressing the 'little old ladies' and upping the curb-appeal/property value of your dwelling.
