My son drives a 2002 GMC ext cab short bed 2 wd with the 5.3l engine. He can get 20 mpg out of it. And he doesn't drive it easy either.
I just got back from a 1500 mile trip and avged 17.2 mpg with a Suburban with the 5.3. That is driving 75-80 most of the time with some stop and go in Houston.
