I've never had it happen but I have heard of it happening. We have always took the pitchfork if the cow cleaned anywhere near the calf or we caught her eating it and picked it up and gave it a toss over the fence away from her.

They claim that the cleanings are full of nutrients that the cow has lost. Supposedly the experts claim that is why the cow eats them. Me, I think as child like as cattle minds are they are not quite that smart. I think the cow eats them to keep predators away by not having a meal close by to where she is with her newborn.

For whatever reason, what you just said is the reason we have always tossed them. I wonder how many we have saved by doing that now.
