| Dairy Quality hay in the West has been mostly $160 give or take 20 bucks at the stack, all season. Calif. has been over $200.
Hay supplies are now extremely low and rumor has it that some dairies are bringing hay from So. Dak. for $250 delivered.
There are reports that dairies in Idaho are still 20% short on what they need. This will carry over into 2008 and supplies will even be tighter. Even though Idaho produces over 5 million tons of alfalfa a year, we are still bringing in large quantities from neighboring states.
Hay prices in 2008 will start out where they left off in 2007 and go up from their.
No increased plantings or very little, is expected, as other profitable crops with less input cost can be planted. Also, seed supplies seem to be getting tight.
Water is another big issue here, as the snow pack is way behind and there is a possibility of some water curtailment next year.
Demand will be strong, as dairies continue to add cows at the current milk price. Futures show some decline in price for next year, but will still be profitable. | |
