NW Washington | Here is some info on growing oil seed radish and mustard as cover crops and control of nematodes in sugar beets from the U of Idaho. http://www.uidaho.edu/sugarbeet/nmtds/oilseed.htm
Potato growers in Washington are using hot mustard's as a cover crop on potato ground to help control nematodes and some diseases. The hot mustard's are good for controlling soil diseases because of their high levels of urisic (sp) acid. Also, insects tend to leave the mustard plants alone too, unlike some of the others which tend to be insect magnets. On the spud ground they get the most benefit by tilling the mustard in while it is still green. Not so good for no-tillers. But any of brassicas like rape, both spring and winter, mustard and radish do good things for the soil besides the benefit of their tap roots. | |
