This operation has been storing corn like this for several years. The corn is in a base that looks like the bottom ring of a grain bin. This ring has fans installed in it. When the pile is complete they put a cover on it and I think that they use the fans to pull a vacuum on the pile when the weather is bad. I don't know for sure how the cover and the fans work, but I guess the system works pretty well because they are making two piles this year instead of one as in years past.
