Central Illinois | As in everything else, there are trade off's here. Corn yield is maximum at black layer. As corn dries in the field, it is subject to wind and insect damage, lodging, dropped ears, and a whole other assortment of problems. It is each individual farms mission to determine what the cost of drying in the field is versus drying in the bin versus drying at the elevator, and make the best decision for his operation. For our's, we open fields and check varieties standability at a slow pace after black layer. At 25%, we hit it hard, hoping to be done before corn gets below 17%. With our drying setup and costs, this works better than waiting for 18 or 20% to start, and finishing at 13%. I hate harvest losses at lower moisture corn, and the many problems associated with downed corn. Remember, every operation is different. | |
