have corn trash with a few ears of corn .

My cows eat baled cornstalks all winter long for the most part. I also give them a TM/salt block and then a couple of months before calving 24% lick tubs from Rural King. There was a big discussion on here a year ago on what it costs to feed a brood cow for a day. I figured all my costs, including replacing the potash on the field where the stalks were baled, were less than $1 per day this way. I feel that in order for a small size cow/calf venture to be profitible we have to keep costs to a minimum. I have a neighbor who comes over and chops the stalks a week or so after they are combined, then windrows and bales them in large round bales. The cows eat it like candy. This is the 2nd year we've chopped before baling, and I think it helps with palatibility a lot.
