A friend of mine used to milk cows. On occasion they ran out of ground hay so they fed in rings till the grinder could get there. That always cost them 5% on production. While not totally the same situation there has to be some correlation. If hay is $100 per ton , grinding about $6, feed conversion savings of 5% = the grinding is nearly free. Not to mention the reduction in waste. We fed for one year by unrolling and went to grinding since. Won't go back except in an emergency. Seems to me the higher the cost of the feed the greater the return to grinding. JMO
