Subject: Re: Grind hay or bale bed?

South Central, Iowa
I mainly deal with the hogs in our operation, but dad has stock cows. We started grinding hay a few years ago, just because of poor quality hay at that time. I don't know if he'd ever go back to strictly feeding hay out of hay rings. They waste way more, because they dig until they find a spot they like and then stop the rest down into the manure. We mix bales as we go, mix in some corn and molasses as we go too. We don't have a scale, because we've only got 25 cows, but dad can estimate how much he gives pretty easily. So I'd say you may save some cost by feeding that way, but if you're worried about feed quality and wastage, grinding hay is the way to go.
